ISO is Changing the Way Standards Are Used: From Purchasing PDFs to a Licensing Model
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is preparing one of the biggest changes in the modern history of standardisation a shift from the traditional model of selling standards towards a system of licensed content usage. Although many organisations are still unaware of the potential impact of this transformation, the changes could significantly redefine the way companies, consultancy firms, certification bodies, and digital platforms use ISO standards in their day-to-day operations.
What Is ISO Actually Changing?
Until now, the dominant model has been relatively straightforward:
An organisation purchases a PDF version of a standard and uses it within the company, often without clearly defined technical or operational limitations.
However, the new approach means that the user no longer “owns” the standard as a document, but instead receives a licence with precisely defined usage rights.
In other words, ISO standards are increasingly moving from the category of traditional documentation into the category of controlled digital content.
