ISO 30201:2026 – Human Resources Become Part of the ISO Management Systems Family

The First International Requirements Standard for Human Resource Management Systems

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has published ISO 30201:2026 engl. Human Resources Management Systems – Requirements, introducing, for the first time, internationally recognised requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving a Human Resources Management System (HRMS).

With the publication of ISO 30201:2026, human resources formally become part of the ISO family of management system standards alongside ISO 9001 (Quality Management), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management), ISO/IEC 27001 (Information Security Management) and ISO 37001 (Anti-Bribery Management). This milestone reflects the growing recognition that people are the most valuable strategic asset of every organisation.

A New Strategic Approach to Human Capital

Modern organisations increasingly recognise that sustainable success depends not only on technology, infrastructure or financial resources, but also on the knowledge, competence, engagement and wellbeing of their workforce.
ISO 30201:2026 establishes a structured management system framework enabling organisations to:
  • align HR processes with organisational strategy;
  • attract, develop and retain competent people;
  • integrate human resource management with enterprise risk management;
  • strengthen organisational capability and resilience;
  • create value for workers, employers and other interested parties;
  • support continual improvement of HR processes and organisational performance.
Integration with Other ISO Management System Standards

One of the principal strengths of ISO 30201 is its compatibility with the harmonised management system structure adopted across ISO management system standards. This enables straightforward integration with existing management systems, including:
  • ISO 9001 – Quality Management Systems;
  • ISO 14001 – Environmental Management Systems;
  • ISO 45001 – Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems;
  • ISO/IEC 27001 – Information Security Management Systems;
  • ISO 37001 – Anti-Bribery Management Systems;
  • ISO 22301 – Business Continuity Management Systems.
As a result, organisations can incorporate human resource management into their integrated management systems, ensuring that workforce management becomes an integral component of governance, strategic planning and continual improvement.

Applicable to Organisations of Every Size

ISO 30201:2026 applies to organisations of all sizes, sectors and stages of development, whether public or private, commercial or not-for-profit.

The standard provides an internationally recognised framework for organisations seeking to strengthen leadership capability, workforce engagement, competence development and long-term organisational sustainability.

What Does This Mean for Organisations?

The publication of ISO 30201 represents a significant milestone in the evolution of management systems.
Organisations adopting its requirements can expect to achieve:
  • improved workforce management;
  • stronger alignment between HR strategy and business objectives;
  • enhanced employee engagement and competence;
  • improved organisational resilience;
  • greater stakeholder confidence;
  • continual improvement of organisational performance.
