The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has officially approved the Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) ISO 14001, paving the way for its publication in mid-April 2026. ISO 14001 is a globally recognized standard for Environmental Management Systems (EMS), helping organizations reduce environmental impact, improve sustainability, and achieve regulatory compliance.
The new version, ISO 14001:2026, introduces several significant updates:
  • Expanded environmental scope – including climate change, biodiversity preservation, resource efficiency, and waste management.

  • Increased management responsibility – top management is required to actively engage in implementing and improving the EMS.

  • Integration with other standards – aligned with the ISO High-Level Structure for easier integration with ISO 9001 and other management systems.

  • Change management – new requirements for planning and assessing risks related to changes within the EMS.

  • Broader value chain coverage – emphasis extends to all processes, products, and services used or provided by the organization.

Organizations certified to ISO 14001 should start preparing for the transition to the new version, which will include an approximate three-year transition period after publication. This revision marks an important step towards modernized environmental management, promoting sustainability and responsible business practices in line with global standards.
