The Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC), during its 48th session in Rome, held from 10 to 14 November 2025, adopted key updates and new standards in the field of food safety. These changes aim to strengthen consumer protection and facilitate international food trade.

Key decisions include:
  • Update of the General Standard for Food Additives (GSFA): revision of over 500 provisions, including the addition of new permitted additives and the removal of some outdated provisions.

  • Improvements in aflatoxin prevention in peanuts: updated recommendations covering cultivation, harvesting, transport, and storage, with additional risk-reduction methods.

  • Establishment of maximum lead levels in spices and aromatic herbs: precise limits for different product types to protect consumers.

  • Adoption of the first international standard for fresh dates: defined quality, uniformity, and packaging criteria.

  • New guidelines for monitoring pesticides and reference materials: increased accuracy of laboratory analyses and enhanced food safety.

These updates enable member countries, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, to improve national regulations in line with international standards. Implementing the new norms contributes to greater food safety, reliability in international trade, and consumer health protection.
